Indian Medical Council Act, is an Indian legislation. The MCI regulates standards of medical education, permission to start colleges, courses or increase the number of seats, registration of doctors, standards of professional conduct of medical practitioners. As a result, the much-awaited NMC will start to function effectively to bring reforms in the Indian medical education sector. Apart from the Chairman, the NMC will consist of 10 ex-officio members and 22 part-time members appointed by the Central government.

An act to provide for the reconstitution of the medical council of India and the maintenance of a medical register for India and for matters connected therewith. Be it enacted by Parliament in the seventh year of the Republic of India as follows-. The Council so constituted shall be a body corporate by the name of the Medical Council of India, having perpetual succession and a common seal, with power to acquire and hold property, both movable and immovable, and to contract and shall by the said name sue and be sued. The Council Shall- 1 constitute from amongst its members an Executive Committee and such other committees for general or special purposes as the Council deems necessary to carry out the purposes of this Act;. Explanation- For the purposes of this section, the criteria for identifying a student who has been granted a medical qualification on the basis of such increase in the admission capacity shall be such as may be prescribed. The following Section 10D shall be inserted in terms of Gazette Notification dated There shall be conducted a uniform entrance examination to all medical educational institutions at the undergraduate level and post-graduate level through such designated authority in Hindi, English and such other languages and in such manner as may be prescribed and the designated authority shall ensure the conduct of uniform entrance examination in the aforesaid manner: Provided that notwithstanding any judgment or order of any court, the provisions of this section shall not apply, in relation to the uniform entrance examination at the undergraduate level for the academic year conducted in accordance with any regulations made under this Act, in respect of the State Government seats whether in Government Medical College or in a private Medical College where such State has not opted for such examination.
