Freud's Theories of Life and Death Instincts
The discipline was established in the early s by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud , who retained the term psychoanalysis for his own school of thought. Psychoanalysis was later developed in different directions, mostly by students of Freud, such as Alfred Adler and his collaborator, Carl Gustav Jung , [iii] as well as by neo-Freudian thinkers, such as Erich Fromm , Karen Horney , and Harry Stack Sullivan. Psychoanalysis has been known to be a controversial discipline, and its validity as a science is very contested. Nonetheless, it retains a relatively salient influence within psychiatry , albeit more so in some quarters than others. The basic tenets of psychoanalysis include: . During psychoanalytic sessions, typically lasting 50 minutes, ideally 4—5 times a week, the patient or analysand may lie on a couch, with the analyst often sitting just behind and out of sight.
He initially described a class of drives known as the life instincts and believed that these drives were responsible for much of our behavior. Eventually, he came to believe that life instincts alone could not explain all human behavior. Sometimes referred to as sexual instincts, the life instincts are those which deal with basic survival, pleasure, and reproduction. These instincts are essential for sustaining the life of the individual as well as the continuation of the species. While we tend to think of life instincts in terms of sexual procreation, these drives also include such things as thirst, hunger, and pain avoidance. The energy created by the life instincts is known as libido. In this later view, he maintained that life instincts were opposed by the self-destructive death instincts, known as Thanatos.

Social workers base their practices on several theories and practice models , including psychodynamic theory. What once was a theory derived from Sigmund Freud is now a network of theories developed and expanded by many theorists since the early s. Psychodynamic theory, also known as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, helps clients understand their emotions and unconscious patterns of behavior.

Mitchell and Margaret J. Black, Basic Books, , ps. These myths are that psychoanalysis is largely the work of one man, that contemporary psychoanalysis , both in theory and practice, is largely unchanged since the time of Freud, that psychoanalysis has gone out of fashion, and that it is a cult requiring conversion and years of study. The body of this book is spent in attempting to debunk the first two of these myths. Thus, the authors' attempt to give an overview of the major schools of thought in contemporary psychoanalysis , beginning, of course, with Freud.
