To promote safe, ethical social work practice, in accordance with international conventions and agreements 1 , when social workers undertake assessments of children that cross nation state borders. This policy and these guidelines were developed to fulfil the motion passed at the General Meeting in Melbourne 2. Employers also have a responsibility to ensure the safe working practices of their social workers and must not require them to practice abroad illegally or unsafely. When undertaking cross border social work, professional practice is consistent with the international conventions, agreements and the IFSW ethical principles which all enshrine the concept of the best interests of the child being paramount.
