Ethics in Couple and Family Therapy
A successful therapeutic relationship depends on clients being able to openly and honestly discuss things that are very personal and private, putting them in an extremely vulnerable position. The safety and protection of clients engaged in therapy are so vital that very specific expectations and requirements for therapist professional conduct have been developed in the form of professional Codes of Ethics and laws regulating the practice of licensed therapists. Unique to the ethics in couple and family therapy is the notion of the family or couple system; everyone is impacted both individually and relationally. At times this creates ethical dilemmas in that what is best for the individual may not be best for the couple or family system. The expectations for ethical therapist conduct are deeply rooted in ethics and moral principles which are thoroughly reviewed and explored during therapist education and training in ethical and legal issues Corey et al.

The AAMFT strives to honor the public trust in marriage and family therapists by setting standards for ethical practice as described in this Code. Marriage and family therapists are defined by an enduring dedication to professional and ethical excellence, as well as the commitment to service, advocacy, and public participation. The areas of service, advocacy, and public participation are recognized as responsibilities to the profession equal in importance to all other aspects. Marriage and family therapists embody these aspirations by participating in activities that contribute to a better community and society, including devoting a portion of their professional activity to services for which there is little or no financial return. Additionally, marriage and family therapists are concerned with developing laws and regulations pertaining to marriage and family therapy that serve the public interest, and with altering such laws and regulations that are not in the public interest.
Conflicts: Treating Multiple Members of a Family
Many therapists and counselors treat more than one member of a family, either concurrently or consecutively. When treating multiple members of a family, the practitioner must be careful to avoid conflicts. Conflicts can sabotage the treatment and lead to the need to terminate with one or more of the participants or all , and can generate a complaint to the licensing board or result in a lawsuit. While it is true that sometimes conflicts cannot be avoided, even by the exercise of sound clinical judgment, it is also true that sometimes conflicts can be avoided or at least the chances of them occurring can be minimized.

Therapists need to develop ethical sensitivity to potential ethical issues in order to decrease their risk in practice, and increase their maneuverability in the therapy room. In Ethics and Professional Issues in Couple and Family Therapy, Lorna Hecker and her contributing authors address various clinical scenarios that demonstrate the complex ethical situations couple and family therapists face every day. Some points discussed in this holistic book include boundary, power, and privilege issues, along with unique ethical issues in practicing therapy with children.
