When it was complete, the Declaration provided a list of 30 articles outlining everyone's universal human rights. The first two articles are about equality and freedom from discrimination, the foundation of the Canadian Human Rights Act. Provincial and territorial human rights laws are very similar to the Canadian Human Rights Act and apply many of the same principles. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition.
