Language and Symbolic Violence - Exploring Pierre Bourdieu's Linguistic Theory

Bourdieu, Language and the Media pp Cite as. Bourdieu has been criticized from traditions within linguistics, such as structuralism and critical discourse analysis, and from directly competing sociological approaches to language, such as sociolinguistics and ethnomethodology.

We will look, firstly, at critical discourse analysis and postmodernist approaches and then go on to consider, principally, the ethnomethodological challenge to Bourdieu.

These debates are very much theoretical ones and abstract, but they nevertheless form the background to the arguments in the chapters which discuss language and the media in case study form. Pierre Bourdieu - Language & Symbolic Power

Symbolic power accounts for discipline used against another to confirm that individual's placement in a social hierarchy , at times in individual relations but most basically through system institutions, in particular education. Also referred to as soft power , symbolic power includes actions that have discriminatory or injurious meaning or implications, such as gender dominance and racism. Symbolic power maintains its effect through the mis-recognition of power relations situated in the social matrix of a given field. While symbolic power requires a dominator, it also requires the dominated to accept their position in the exchange of social value that occurs between them. The concept of symbolic power may be seen as grounded in Friedrich Engels ' concept of false consciousness.

Bourdieu develops a forceful critique of traditional approaches to language, including the linguistic theories of Saussure and Chomsky and the theory of speech-acts elaborated by Austin and others. He argues that language should be viewed not only as a means of communication but also as a medium of power through which individuals pursue their own interests and display their practical competence. Hence every linguistic interaction, however personal or insignificant it may seem, bears the traces of the social structure that it both expresses and helps to reproduce. It also opens up a new approach to the ways in which language is used in the domain of politics. For politics is, among other things, the arena in which words are deeds and the symbolic character of power is at stake. This volume, by one of the leading social thinkers in the world today, represents a major contribution to the study of language and power. It will be of interest to students throughout the social sciences and humanities, especially in sociology, politics, anthropology, linguistics, and literature.
