Tertiary treatment is the final cleaning process that improves wastewater quality before it is reused, recycled or discharged to the environment.
Jun 27, Bloganica. In fact, there are three distinct steps involved in traditional wastewater treatment methods. Primary treatment of wastewater involves sedimentation of solid waste within the water. This is done after filtering out larger contaminants within the water. Wastewater is passed through several tanks and filters that separate water from contaminants.
Wastewater Treatment Water Use
When wastewater arrives at the treatment plant, it contains many solids that cannot be removed by the wastewater treatment process. This can include rags, paper, wood, food particles, egg shells, plastic, and even toys and money. To remove these solids, the wastewater enters a building called the Headworks and passes through large screen filters which removed this material. The solids are then placed in a dumpster and taken to the landfill. This is the only byproduct of wastewater treatment that is not recycled! From the Headworks, the wastewater flows into two huge circular tanks called Primary Clarifiers.
Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from municipal wastewater , containing mainly household sewage plus some industrial wastewater. Physical, chemical, and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and produce treated wastewater or treated effluent that is safe enough for release into the environment. A by-product of sewage treatment is a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge. The sludge has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or application to land. Sewage treatment may also be referred to as wastewater treatment. However, the latter is a broader term that can also refer to industrial wastewater.

Conventional wastewater treatment, primary and secondary treatment processes with simultaneous phosphorus precipitation, is the most common process combination used in Finnish wastewater treatment plants WWTPs. It typically eliminates most of the organic load and phosphorus, as well as part of the enteric microorganisms present in raw wastewater.

Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Wastewater Treatment: How Do They Work?
Primary treatment removes material that will either float or readily settle out by gravity. It includes the physical processes of screening, comminution, grit removal, and sedimentation. Screens are made of long, closely spaced, narrow metal bars.
