Although a nutritious and adequate food supply is vital to human survival, it can also pose a health risk from foodborne illnesses, which at times become fatal. In addition to providing nutrients, food can also potentially be a source of harm to a consumer. Hazards associated with food include microbiological pathogens, naturally occurring toxins, allergens, intentional and unintentional additives, modified food components and agricultural chemicals. Hence, food safety is needed. Food safety is a scientific discipline describing the handling, preparation and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. This includes a number of routines that should be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards. Effective food control systems are essential to protect the health and safety of consumers.
A global scientific meeting is planned for November , in order to assemble a variety of international experts in the field to address the impact, importance, and challenges of microbiological sampling of water for food safety and public health. The objectives of the summit include i a deeper exploration of how to better maximize and leverage the fusion of microbiological water sampling and whole genome sequencing on a global scale; ii to identify and mitigate the scientific and policy challenges surrounding effective water sampling and timely whole genome sequencing analysis of resultant bacterial isolates; and iii to ensure that appropriate and optimal collection, isolation, and characterization methods are fully validated and in place to support this global public health endeavor. We will invite approximately participants from international NGO organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, and the food safety industry to the meeting. The meeting will consist of three days of symposia and group discussion panels. Symposia will cover successful examples of microbiological surveillance of water for foodborne and waterborne pathogens, genomic-based pathogen studies from water-associated enteric pathogens, and some discussion around the unique microbiological requirements of sampling and analyzing water and sediments for enteric pathogens.
PDF | Food safety regulations designed for industrial-scale food producers can create insurmountable challenges when applied to small-scale.
Commodity-specific Secure Food Supply Plans are increasingly recognized by producers, veterinarians and regulatory officials as important resources. Vehicle cleaning and disinfection on livestock operations is a critical component of an on-farm biosecurity plan during a foreign animal disease outbreak. The mission of the CFSPH is to increase national and international preparedness for accidental or intentional introduction of diseases that threaten food production or public health. Motivation for Global Food Security arose from concern about the difficulty for scientists and policy makers to keep up with the expanding volume of information published about the challenge of ensuring food systems are meeting human food and nutritional requirements while protecting the environment Motivation for Global Food Security arose from concern about the difficulty for scientists and policy makers to keep up with the expanding volume of information published about the challenge of ensuring food systems are meeting human food and nutritional requirements while protecting the environment, securing livelihoods, mitigating against climate change, and ensuring equity. Global Food Security aims to publish papers that contribute to better understanding of economic, social, biophysical, technological, and institutional drivers of current and future global food security, nutrition and food systems. It aims to stimulate debate that is rooted in strong science, has strong interdisciplinary connections, and recognizes trade-offs that often occur as a result of reconciling competing objectives and outcomes that may differ depending on spatial and temporal scale. While integration across academic disciplines is encouraged, papers on components of Global Food Security will also be considered if they address important constraints and have a broad inference space.

Food security is a measure of the availability of food and individuals' ability to access it. There is evidence of food security being a concern many thousands of years ago, with central authorities in ancient China and ancient Egypt being known to release food from storage in times of famine. At the World Food Conference the term "food security" was defined with an emphasis on supply; food security is defined as the "availability at all times of adequate, nourishing, diverse, balanced and moderate world food supplies of basic foodstuffs to sustain a steady expansion of food consumption and to offset fluctuations in production and prices". The final report of the World Food Summit states that food security "exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Household food security exists when all members, at all times, have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In the years —, an estimated million people were suffering from chronic hunger. The World Summit on Food Security declared that "food should not be used as an instrument for political and economic pressure".
The availability, access and consumption of nutritionally adequate food are the three pillars on which the concept of food security is based. Climate change, water scarcity and soil depletion are some of the threats that threaten it globally, which have now been joined by the socioeconomic effects of the COVID pandemic. SDG 2 is a commitment to end all types of hunger and malnourishment by , particularly among children, and it underlines the importance of sustainable agriculture.
