Our work as interaction-design researchers, like that of any other researcher, entails the construction and communication of knowledge. When we say interaction design in this context, we refer to design-oriented practices within the academic field of human-computer interaction HCI.

In the HCI field, the dominant approach to knowledge construction is to design innovative interaction schemes and to evaluate them empirically through more or less rigorous use studies.

Broadly speaking, this approach has two parallel aims in terms of knowledge construction: To present particular examples of innovative designs, and to contribute to a more generalized understanding of human-computer interaction. Design theory is an academic field of some stature; even though it may be somewhat fuzzy around the edges, it still represents close to half a century of conceptualizing and theorizing on design.

It aims to be pertinent to all design disciplines; the assumption is that there is a common core of practices, processes and conceptualizations across, e. There is increasing recognition that interaction design — including a design-oriented approach to HCI — can, and should, be seen as a design discipline. This will be our position in this course.

Given that, it follows that concepts from design theory might be relevant also to our field. We will therefore start from the writings in design theory and later shift to reading about how that is in turn taken up and discussed in HCI and interaction design.

The aim is to be able to argue for novel design knowledge using the same three criteria that should hold for any novel research contribution: that it is novel contestable , that it has been validated substantive and that it is one worth the time and effort of the researcher making it and the community members engaging with it substantive.

With interaction design, we here mean design oriented practices in the research domain that is designated human computer interaction HCI. In the field of HCI, the dominating research approach is to create innovative interaction models and then evaluate them empirically through more or less rigorous user studies. This attempt leads to two simultaneous aims regarding knowledge production: both to create unique, innovative design examples, but also to contribute to a more generalised understanding of interaction design.

The related field, design theory is a relatively young academic field with approximately 50 years of development on the neck.

Design theory is about all types of design. The assumption is that there is a common core of practices, processes and conceptualisations that cross many different design disciplines e g architecture and product design.

Step by step, many persons have come to see interaction design in HCI as a design discipline. This will become our starting point in this course. Based on this, we will pick concepts from the design theory that can be relevant also in our field. We will start from what has been written there to then read more about how this has been interpreted and used in interaction design. The aim is to be able to argue for new design knowledge from the three criteria that apply to new research: that it is contestable, defensible, and substantive.

After a passing the course, the student should know research methodology for design research in order to make knowledge contributions that are contestable, defensible and substantive. On every occasion, one of the doctoral students will introduce the texts of the day while another will present some issues that are relevant based on the texts we read. Koskinen, I. Human—computer interaction HCI studies the design and use of computer technology , focused on the interfaces between people users and computers. Researchers in the field of HCI observe the ways in which humans interact with computers and design technologies that let humans interact with computers in novel ways. As a field of research, human-computer interaction is situated at the intersection of computer science , behavioural sciences , design , media studies , and several other fields of study. The term was popularized by Stuart K. Card , Allen Newell , and Thomas P. Moran in their seminal book, The Psychology of Human—Computer Interaction , although the authors first used the term in [1] and the first known use was in The notion of dialog likens human—computer interaction to human-to-human interaction, an analogy which is crucial to theoretical considerations in the field.

Critical Design is becoming an increasingly influential discipline, affecting policy and practice in a range of fields. Matt Malpass's book is the first to introduce critical design as a field, providing a history of the discipline, outlining its key influences, theories and approaches, and explaining how critical design can work in practice through a range of contemporary examples.

Critical theory also capitalized as Critical Theory [1] is an approach to social philosophy that focuses on reflective assessment and critique of society and culture in order to reveal and challenge power structures. With origins in sociology and literary criticism , it argues that social problems are influenced and created more by societal structures and cultural assumptions than by individual and psychological factors. Maintaining that ideology is the principal obstacle to human liberation, [2] critical theory was established as a school of thought primarily by the Frankfurt School theoreticians Herbert Marcuse , Theodor Adorno , Walter Benjamin , Erich Fromm , and Max Horkheimer. Horkheimer described a theory as critical insofar as it seeks "to liberate human beings from the circumstances that enslave them. In sociology and political philosophy , "Critical Theory" means the Western-Marxist philosophy of the Frankfurt School , developed in Germany in the s and drawing on the ideas of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud.

Over the decades, human computer interaction (HCI) has incorporated ethical research from diverse fields such as computer ethics [25], computer.
