Los dioses son como los hombres: nacen y mueren sobre el pecho de una mujer May 21, Eric Williamson rated it really liked it. A fascinating book from a historical standpoint.

Jules Michelet was a renowned French historian and radical, and his politics is evident in the book. He sees Medieval witchcraft as a act of rebellion against the oppressive Catholic church.

It is effectively two books, the first is speculative, and the narrative is quite interesting. The second part is more of a dry history of the trials and persecutions. Largely regarded as inaccurate today, it is still an important work because it was one of the first to look at the occult in a sympathetic manner.

A fabulous, albeit most likely wholly innacurate rendition of the medieval witch craze. I enjoyed this greatly mainly due to Michelet's truly incandescent narrative flair. The French writers I have read seem to have truly unique and inflammatory voices, often radical and often saturated with a festering nihilism - an abhorence of humanity in all it's grossness and grotesqueness.

This would be enjoyed by anyone who enjoyed Lautreamont or Huysmans, as it surges with a very similar repugnance for human life and revels in the foulness of damned souls, perversions and the black arts, with a philosophical spin. Michelet creates a wholly original spin on the topic through his choice of presenting the book almost as a fictional account.

The story of the witch is developed through the initial half of the book - the latter dealing with analysis of specific French trials. Hugely enjoyable, but to be consumed with a generous pinch of salt maybe throw it over your shoulder for good luck afterwards.

A good fast read! This was such a great, easy and creative book. The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. Sep 12, Derek Davis rated it it was amazing. I doubt this is the same translation I have, which goes way back, but the book itself is nothing like most history you will read from any period.

A 19th century French look at the medieval witchcrraft phenomenon, it takes the side of the woman without apology or reserve. It also ignores fact much of the time for an open-handed interpretative and semi-fictionalized way of introducing place and mood. Is this good history? Hard to tell, really. Mostly, it's a highly personal take on a complex subjec I doubt this is the same translation I have, which goes way back, but the book itself is nothing like most history you will read from any period.

Mostly, it's a highly personal take on a complex subject which, up to Michelet's time, had had little examination outside the Church's horrid rantings. View 1 comment. Dec 21, Mary Rose rated it really liked it Shelves: history-france , history-medieval , history-witches-devils-ghosts , history. Note: This is not an up-to-date history of witchcraft.

It was written in the s, and so many of its findings are antiquated or just plain wrong. Since I study what people in the 19th century thought about about the middle ages, it was perfect for me. It may or may not be perfect for someone else. STILL it has some of the most beautiful writing. I wish we wrote more history like that sometimes. Mal, porque no era lo que esperaba.

I'm used to reading serious scientific essays, which is what I was expecting from this one. However, it reads like a bad novel with facts splashed in.

Je ne connaissais pas ce livre auparavant. I checked this out because I'd liked the rather psychedelic movie based on it, Kanashimi no Belladonna, and was curious how a nonfiction book about historical witchcraft had managed to translate into that storyline - the answer is that the storyline was already present and this book barely tries to be nonfiction at all.

This is a fever dream. Es terriblemente pesado. Naturalmente se trata de cosas que actualmente nos parecen absurdas. Jun 03, Povilas Borkovskij rated it really liked it. Lovely disaster. I would recommend it to every Christian. Jan 27, Side Real Press rated it liked it. My copy is an earlier edition entitled 'The Sorceress' and dated Another translation can be read online but mine seems the 'better'- though there is not much in it.

Its a very odd read. Michelet obviously knows his stuff for the 's and has done a lot of research but the overall effect is rather like reading Montague Summers - learned but a bit mad as well. Michelet, unlike Summers, has nothing good to say about the Church and the latter half of the book consists of a number of account My copy is an earlier edition entitled 'The Sorceress' and dated Michelet, unlike Summers, has nothing good to say about the Church and the latter half of the book consists of a number of accounts of various witch trials Loudun, Bavent etc which make grim, and slightly lurid certainly for the times reading.

His basic theory was that medieval life was made so grim by the church and state that 'Satanism' was an act of rebellion by women who had no real societal status. This idea still has some traction nowadays, for example female Islamic shamans are able to act in a 'transgressive' manner in a way they could not as a 'normal' member of society and his theory that Church and state acted to absorb and neuter these trangressions surely still applies today, Church of Satan anyone?

But Michelet has romanticised the whole thing to such an extent that it becomes somewhat ludicrous and this undermines his thesis. I think not. And yet and yet, its very odd style and use of language if you don't like dense Victorian writing then avoid it like the very devil himself somehow appealed to me and its sheer bonkersness made it quite fun. Because it is a 'tough' read.
